Cold weather is hard on batteries
Batteries lose capacity as temperatures drop, which is why a battery that was fine in October can fail on the first truly cold morning. If your engine has started cranking more slowly than usual, have the battery checked before winter sets in.
Keep a basic kit in the vehicle
A snow brush and scraper, a small shovel, warm layers, a blanket, a flashlight, and a charged phone go a long way if you end up waiting at the side of the road. Keeping your fuel tank reasonably full also helps if traffic stops for a long stretch.
If you slide off the road
Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on where possible, put your hazard lights on, and call for help. Vehicles stuck in soft ground, snow or a ditch usually need winching and recovery rather than a simple pull.
